Warm Up Excercise

ARTS IN THE PARK

The students of E.V. Cain will be participating in an art exhibition on Saturday May 10, 2012 sponsored by the Auburn Art Commission. The location for the event will be in the Auburn School Park Preserve in Auburn. Due to limited space, only selected student artwork will be displayed.

STUDENT ART SUBMISSIONS

Mr. Sarradet will be selecting artwork from the current art students and invites all art students from previous trimesters to submit art for review. E.V. Cain students who have not taken art class with Mr. Sarradet may also submit work for review. Submitted work must be 9 inches by 12 inches or less. All artwork will be matted but not framed. You may submit artwork already matted. Bring your artwork to Mr. Sarradet in Room 28 by Friday April 27th.

ART EXHIBIT

This will be a big project to undertake and I could use some help to make sure that our art students have a successful exhibit. We are limited to a 10 foot by 10 foot space, just right for a commercial grade E-Z Up with panels hanging from the side braces and one from the center to create a mini gallery. Here is a concept of what I have in mind:

Art Tent

This layout will give us a lot of area for student art. The table would be used if any ceramics, macrame, or sculptures are submitted. The panels can be made of solid wood panels, but a framed version would be lighter and easier to attach student art:

If any parents would like to construct these panels and/or donate the materials, please email Mr. Sarradet A link to the plastic cardboard panels that we will need can be found HERE

Please contact me if you have a 10 foot by 10 foot E-Z Up that we may borrow for the exhibit.

THANK YOU OUR ART PATRONS!

Sugar Plump FairiesOur art program at E.V. Cain requires a lot of financial assistance to run successfully. But thanks to the generous support of the E.V. Cain Parent Teachers Committee, the Sugar Plump Fairies, and and last but not least to the Auburn Education Foundation, we are able to provide a top quality art education to the students of E.V. Cain.

YOU CAN HELP TOO

A list of art supplies that we use can be found HERE Select the items that you want to donate and the items will be shipped directly to the school and put into the hands of our students. THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT!

Class Goals:
  • build the basic skills in a variety of art mediums
  • give the students an understanding of the principles and elements of art and the ability to use them in creating and describing art.
  • build a basic knowlege of art from Greece, Rome, the Renaissance, and of the Impressionists.

SMART Goals:

  • By the end of the trimester, 6th art students will show marked improvement in drawing skills, to be assessed by a comparison of a first week drawing with a last week drawing of the same subject. Specifically, the students will improve the interpretation of line, value, and composition.
  • By the end of the trimester, 7th and 8th grade art students will be able to identify from memory at least 10 major works of art by name and artist assessed by exam. 7th grade students will concentrate on Renaissance masters and 8th graders on the Impressionists.

COURSE DESCRIPTION
Visual art is offered as an enrichment class at E.V. Cain.  Students will be enrolled in the class for 13 weeks before rotating to one of the other enrichment classes offered here. While in this class, students will have a variety of lessons in accordance with the California Visual Art Framework.

Art Supplies
All art supplies will be provided by the teacher through the generosity of the Sugar Plump Fairies of Auburn, the Auburn Education Foundation, and the parents who donated to the elective fee. ART SUPPLIES ARE NOT INEXENSIVE. It takes a lot of money to provide the materials required in an art class.

Each desk will have an art caddy containing pencils, colored pencils, brushes, erasers, and pencil sharpeners.  IT IS THE RESPONSIB ILITY OF THE STUDENTS ASSIGNED TO THAT DESK TO MAINTAIN THOSE SUPPLIES. Upon entry into class, students are expected to do a quick inventory of the supplies and report any missing or damaged items.  Students who abuse art supplies must replace those items with items of equal or greater cost.

Art Supplies Donations
Some parents have asked if they can donate money or supplies to the school’s art program.  I have set up a list on the Dick Blick website that parents may purchase items and have them sent to the school.  The link to the site is http://www.dickblick.com/lists/artroomaid/0AU4T77LOC3AC/publicview/

Special Note to Parents

I highly recommend that you encourage your child to continue making art at home.  A basic set of art supplies can go a long way if treated properly.  I highly recommend a visit to Dawn’s Hallmark at 13390 Lincoln Way, Auburn, CA.  We will cover several types of mediums over the course of the class, but here is a basic list of materials that will be useful:

  • Drawing pencils – a 4H, HB or F, and a 4B
  • Art eraser
  • Hand held pencil sharpener
  • Colored pencils
  • A spiral bound sketchbook.

CLASSROOM PROCEDURES

  • While the environment in art class welcomes interaction with students at times, students are expected to follow the Wildcat values; safe, respectful, responsible while in the classroom.
  • If you are in the first period class, you will stand without support of the furniture for the duration of the Pledge of Allegiance. You are not obligated to recite the pledge, but you will show proper respect.
  • Students must be inside the classroom when the second bell rings.
  • Students will sit in assigned seats, no exceptions.
  • Students may go to the bathroom 10 minutes after the second bell and no later than 15 minutes prior to the end of class. Students must be back in class within 5 minutes of leaving. Violators will be given in class detention. Habitual violators will lose the privilege.
  • Students may not open any drawer or cabinet without express permission to do so.
  • Students are responsible for the care and maintenance of art materials and equipment.
  • No classroom materials may be removed from the classroom without permission.
  • Students will be dismissed from class when all work areas are clean and orderly.
  • Only students with the teacher’s permission are allowed in the center room.
  • Students  are responsible for legibly printing their first name, last name and below that the period, art , and grade level in block letters in the lower right hand corner or if not possible, in the upper right hand corner on the back of the artwork. It should look like this if you are a 7th grade student during the 2nd period:

JOHN JONES
2 ART 7

  • Artwork that is not properly marked will not be graded.
  • Students are responsible for completing all assignments.  If a student is absent for an extended period of time, he/she may download instructions and handouts from the teacher’s website.
  • Student artwork is graded with a 4 point rubric. Assessment is made on project completeness and on how closely the student followed the instructions. STUDENTS WILL NOT RECIVE A GRADE ON ARTISTIC ABILITY.
    • 5 points(extra credit) – the student not only met all assignment requirements, but also gave extra effort in the assignment.  5points is also awarded to students deemed above average in artistic ability (only instance of artistic ability graded) Students who consistently score 5 points should consider a career path in the visual arts.
    • 4 points – the student has completed the assignment as required using the techniques taught for that lesson.
    • 3 points - the student has partially completed the assignment as requires and/or used a portion of the techniques taught for that lesson.
    • 2 points – the assignment is less than 50% complete and or less than 50% of the techniques were used.
    • 1 point – less than 25% of the assignment is completed.
    • 0 points – the assignment is missing or show minimal effort.

While in this class, students will have a variety of lessons in accordance with the California Visual Art Framework.

In 7th grade social studies, the students learn about the Renaissance and their art lessons reflect that. They begin with graphite pencil as they did in 6th grade but soon switch to the challenging medium of pen & ink. The skills that they build with ink will come to good use when they learn how to make intaglio prints using a stylus to etch into a plexiglas plate and making a series of prints from the completed matrix. They will end the course with another medium of the Renaissance, watercolor, and will create still lifes in the tradition of Albrecht Dürer.

COURSE DESCRIPTION
Visual art is offered as an enrichment class at E.V. Cain.  Students will be enrolled in the class for around 13 weeks before rotating to one of the other enrichment classes offered here. While in this class, students will have a variety of lessons in accordance with the California Visual Art Framework.

The theme for 8th grade art is Impressionism. Students learn about the Impressionist movement and study the painting of the masters. They will create a still life in the Impressionist style using oil pastels. The final medium studied will be clay as the students create ceramic works of art and fire them in the school's kiln.

During the 13 week course, the students will work with several types of mediums. Each medium in broken down into the following grading categories:

Excercise (10% of Grade) - These excercises are designed to teach the basic skills needed to work in the medium. In drawing, for instance, the students learn how create value (shading) by creating a value scale.

Study (20% of Grade) - The students put what they have learning into creating a study. A study is a small work of art that is a kind of practice in preparation of producing the project. An example would be that the student will create a single piece of fruit in colored pencil before tackling a multi fruit still life. Artists may create hundreds of studies before working on the masterpiece.

Project (40% of Grade) - This is where the students bring all of the pieces together to create the final work of art. Art projects may take a couple of days to a week or more depending on the complexity of the project. This is the major part of the grade because this is what art class is all about; creating works of art.

In addition to art works, students will also have classes to enhance their understanding and appreciation of art:

Art Theory (10% of Grade)- What is color and what is the relationship of color to each other? What are the elements and principles of art? What makes a balanced image? These are the types of subjects covered in a series of PowerPoint presentations given over the course of the trimester.

Art History (20% of Grade) - Imagine a football fan who has never heard of Joe Namath or Joe Montana. A baseball fan who doesn't know how Babe Ruth is? It is unheard of. Yet how many young artists know of the works of the Renaissance and Impressionist masters? Da Vinci, Michalangelo, or Albrecht Dürer ? Through a series of PowerPoint presentations, the students discover the world of the masters and learn what makes art great. Selected masterpieces are presented and discussed using the principles and elements of art as the language to describe them.

Student artwork is graded with a 4 point rubric.

5 points are also awarded to students deemed above average in artistic ability (only instance of artistic ability graded) Students who consistently score 5 points should consider a career path in the visual arts.
