APRIL 2012 EDITION
7th Grade Teachers, Who Will You Have?
By: Sydney Parson
There are eight teachers in 7th grade. There are teachers who teach computers, Language Arts, Social Studies. They also teach Art, Math, and Science. Mrs. Conn teaches Language Arts. So does Mr. Paris. Mrs. Conn teaches in room four and Mr. Paris teaches in room eight.
There is also Mr. Campbell, who teaches in room 25. He is the only computer teacher. Mr. Campbell teaches 6th graders, 7th graders, and 8th graders. Another teacher is Mr. Prero. He is a Social Studies and a Language Arts teacher. Mr. Prero teaches in room 10. He also teaches elective. The fourth teacher is Mr. Sarradet. He is an Art teacher in room 28. He teaches all the grades.
The next teacher is Mrs. Stedman. She teaches Math and Pre-Algebra in room 6. Mrs. Swayze is a science teacher, who teaches only 7th and 8th graders. She teaches in room 22. She has a neighbor. His name is Mr. Wells. He is also a Science teacher. He teaches in room 21. Those are all the teachers in 7th grade.
The teachers don’t choose who will be in their classes. They don’t even know what kids are available. Mrs. Cooke is the one who chooses where to put the kids. She works in the office as an Attendance Clerk. She puts the children in a specific class because she knows the teachers and so she tries to put the kids in a class that they might succeed.

ALC ROOM
BY: Timothy
Are you bored at lunch? Well, this reporter says no more! Just go to room 1 to have a good time. There, you can play games or read a book, you can do this for awhile or even all of lunch. There you never know who you will meet. But remember, never go at the very beginning of lunch.
Some of the games that are available are: Star Wars, Lego Star Wars, Mario Cart, and Football. The one thing you don’t want to do is to get sent there during class. The only time you can do that is to get the teacher peeved. You have to sit in a box\desk the whole time. And, if you don’t get the work done in time the teacher usually makes you stay. One thing people talk about is whether the ALC room should have a couch? 43 people say yes, while only 5 say no. What do you think about the couch: yes or no? Don’t think you can’t make a difference; you could. Remember, if you have games you do not want donate, them to room one. They’ll get plenty of use. ____________________________
Are you ready for Alliance Redwoods Camp?!
By: Sierra Slusher
This year 6th grade camp is going to Alliance Redwoods in Sonoma County, California. This camp has been working with churches, school groups, even just families ready to have a great time ever since 1946. This is all to learn a great experience with wilderness settings. For our 6th graders, it is $175, for food, activities, and a leaning outdoor wilderness experience. The cabins can fit 5 kids and 1 adult. There are 2 bunk beds and a futon. The females are separate from the males. Bathrooms are down the street with 4 toilets, 4 showers, and 4 sinks. There are many rooms, to name a few are lounge/office, fire site, and Forest Theater. Activities will be so much fun: swings, climbing, rope courses, zip line, and other great activities. You will be visiting the Russian River, too. All activities I found out are completely safe. Food is provided for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Breakfast has pancakes, waffles, French toast, scrambled eggs, ham, bacon, sausage, toast, and fresh fruit. With a drink of coffee, hot chocolate, juice, or milk. Lunch and dinner are the same it comes with a main dish, vegetables, bread, salad, fruit, soup, and dessert. Within all those hours, there would be snacks. I asked an student at E.V Cain “What are you expecting in the outdoor tree activities to be like?” She answered and said “To get active and be off electronics. I think it would be fun.” I also asked another student, “What do you think about the food and what are you are expecting it to taste like? “I think Delicious, healthy, but with good desserts.”
Alliance Redwoods will be so much fun for our 6th graders.
It will be an amazing outdoor experience. Great activities, food, and hanging out with friends for a couple days. Some classes have been there this year, but more class rooms are going soon. If you have any questions you can contact, Mervyn Coetzee at 707-874-3507
Book Fair
ByMelissa McGinnis
The book fair is back! It has been a few years since we’ve had a book fair. The money from the book fair is going to the library for more books! So technically the book fair is updating the library. Also the library is going to make it an annual book fair from now on. Also, if you can’t make it to the book fair, you might still be able to order online. Parent volunteers ran the book fair, which was held March 19-23, in the library. Teachers took their classes during the day, and the fair was open before and after school, and during lunch. On sale were all sorts of popular books, plus an assorted posters, pencils, erasers, etc.

Charter Schools, What’s the Point?
By Troy Sheldon
What are the benefits of having a charter school? Well, actually there are many, such as new technology and more money. None of us are complaining about being a charter school because, for us, there are no major differences. Other than new computers, what are we getting?
One of the changes we should have is more activities, such as opening the skyzone trip to seventh graders or starting more sixth grade open sports. As I said earlier, there are no major changes, but that’s part of the problem. We became a charter school for a reason, right? We should at least get a few changes, such as something special on Friday, although I don’t know what’s available for the school so I can’t make any suggestions.
Otherwise, most people like E.V. Cain including me but it seems as if it’s missing something important and fun. We used to have sports at lunch, for example. My last suggestion is that the school uses its money to everyone’s advantage. Other schools are converting to charter, too, because they realize it’s a good idea, and we do too, so let’s use our new privileges as a charter school. Right now no more ideas are coming to mind, and there are probably tons out there, so use them.

Why DON’T KIDS CHEW ON GUM DURING TEST?
By: Nick Duncan
Does your teacher not let you chew gum during test THEN read this?
To learn how to chew gum during test.
Teachers might think that when kids are done chewing their gum that they will stick it to the bottom of the desk, and throw it on the ground. But I think that it could change by trusting students and if they do something bad you should not let them eat gum for that trimester, and at the end of the year anyone that never got in trouble that year gets a full pack of gum!
I have asked my elective teacher about chewing gum during test’ and he said, absolutely not! Then I asked kids if they would like to chew on gum during test and most of them said yes! So by and large is teacher’s don’t want kids chewing gum during test and kids want to. The teacher’s main reason for kids not to chew gum is because it will end up on the ground, on under the desk, and it’s not allowed at school! E.V Cain is not a gum-free school’ some teachers allow students to chew gum, so all of this really depends on the teacher?
HOT CHEETOS!
BY NATHAN FORD
People at EV CAIN love hot CHEETOS. So if everyone buys them they should lower the price because more people will buy them and that means more money. I have a friend who buys something like 5 hot CHEETOS bags, and he pays app $4. And if they lower the price, he would buy more. The school runs out and everyone wants CHEETOS. If you would look around you will see a lot of people eating hot CHEETOS. People say they’re not hot. The school has the small hot CHEETO bags but the store by our school has the big ones. So, people go there before school and get those.

School Event
By: Kelsey Casey
At E.V Cain Charter Middle School we have school events such as rally’s, Crazy Day, Twin Day, Western Day, Express Yourself Day, Dances, Pajama Day, Classy Day, and if you wanted you could dress up for Halloween. I have interviewed the school’s vice-principal, Mrs. Leftridge. I asked her questions such as why do we have these school events?” and she said, “Because it gives the kids the excitement to wake up in the morning and dress up for school.” And, they usually get excited to see what their friends dress up as. I also asked her about the contest they have at lunch. She said, “It’s extremely fun to watch all the kids stand up on stage and see all of their outfits.” And also, if they do win, they get a small prize. Then, coming up, we have two more events, such as the Super Hero/Villain Day, where the kids get to dress up as their favorite super hero or villain. Then our next school event is the school talent show. The days you can audition are May 12, 13, 16. The talent that you’re doing has to be longer than two minutes but shorter than five minutes. You also can do it with a partner if you wanted to. I love E.V Cain because of all the fun things that we do! This school is amazing, and all of the kids in 5th grade are going to love it here!

Lunch time at E.V.Cain
By Aaron prentice
Why did E. V. Cain School take out the sports during lunch time? Most people at lunch like sports. Why can’t we have the lunchtime sports put back? Kids could get more exercise. It would be cool if the principal could think about having fun sports during lunch time. But you would have to have a certain grade point average.
We could have a whole bunch of different sports such as: basketball, football, ultimate Frisbee, soccer, and tennis. We should also vote for what we do for most of the sports, because we could have certain teams that we are on so we can play against the other teams. And whoever wins in the actual tournaments the team who wins gets a prize or something. For the 7th grade, they do the sports at a different time than the rest of the grades because there wouldn’t be enough room for everybody.
There would be a certain amount of games happening at a certain time. Or else, most of the games will be interrupted by some of the kids at school. The school should also buy some new school equipment too, because there is no good sports equipment. Mr. Ittner could even make some jerseys for the school sports so people know what team we are on. That’s what I think the school should do!
WHY CAN’T WE LISTEN TO MUSIC WHEN TACKING TESTS?
By Alan Schnepp
These are some of the advantages and disadvantages about listening to music during tests: I think we should be able to listen to music when taking tests because it could help you think. But, it may distract you. Teachers should trust kids. Mr.Prero thinks it may be a good idea. Tell all teachers. It is a teacher’s choice: music or not, head phone or not, or he plays it off a radio. And, it is a teacher’s choice what type of music is played.
Also, you may not be tempted to cheat, and you may not hear other people. Most people listen to music when doing homework. Some disadvantages are you could be blaring your music and bug other people. You may not have a music player and can’t listen to music so too bad for you. And the music may distract you. What do you think?

Rally
Diana Argueta
In E. V. Cain Middle School, we have something called rallies which are school spirit events. I think that rallies are fun. The school’s mascots are always there. The 6 th graders sit on the ground, and so do the 7 th graders. The 8 th graders sit in the bleachers. The students that play a sport get to run around the gym, and then they stand in front of the grade that they are in and say their names.
The glee club sometimes sings at the rallies, and then some people from the office make a power point presentation with the names of the people who have perfect attendance. They have a list of the names on a piece of paper stuck on a wall, and the principal or either one of the vice - principals call the names. They close their eyes and choose a name, and the winner gets a prize.
I think that they should not do rallies while other classes are on field trips. That is unfair because they miss out on all the fun, even though they might be having fun on their field trip. I bet that they would like to be at the rallies. Another reason I think having rallies is fun because there are a lot of things that they do, such as competitions, like teachers vs. students or students and teachers in one group vs. another group with the same amount of teachers and students .That’s why I think rallies are fun. GO WILDCATS!!!!!

School Styles By Chelsie Goodwin
School styles are based on the fact that kids get picked on for what they wear. I think that it’s the stupidest thing, because some kids can’t afford to buy new clothes all the time, or maybe their parents need to spend the money on food and school rather than clothes for they’re kids. Cloths can be great presents, but the cloths wanted aren’t always affordable.

Spring break or summer
By: Jonny Callahan
Why we don’t have a longer spring break? I know we all want a longer one. I asked Mrs. Leftridge why and she said,” we don’t have a longer spring break because we lose money”. And it will cut into our summer vacation.
Also we can’t afford to have a longer spring break. I don’t want a longer one because I want a long summer. But I also want a longer one. That isn’t going to happen!
But other kids want a shorter summer so they can see their friends. Also it’s about money. We can’t afford both to be longer, so I guess the things will stay the same.

STAR Tests Coming Soon!
By Brenn Haydon Welcome Testing!
Only a few weeks until E.V. Cain students begin STAR testing. In the eyes of students STAR testing brings nervousness, exhaustion, and what seems like weeks and weeks of testing. Although it isn’t the most enjoyable moment for students, it is a time to determine if E.V. Cain measures up to the standards designed by the California State Department of Education.
It may not be pleasant for students, more like the opposite, but most students feel prepared. Sydney Parson, a sixth grader at E.V. Cain, states that her teacher has really prepared her. “I feel prepared because our teacher slows down and focuses on subjects or skills we don’t quite understand,” Parson shares.
Let the Preparation Begin!
Not only are the students worried, but teachers are as well, as they try to prepare their students. Mr. Gail states, “One of the hardest skills to use during the standardized tests is ruling out the wrong answers. I try to help the students prepare by pointing out this skill over and over and by encouraging them to prove to themselves that they are right. Don’t just trust yourself, make yourself prove it!”
When asked about her opinion on the practice tests, Mrs. Gail believes that students need practice tests. She states, “Test taking is a skill; it seems as if the state is also testing you on your ability to take a test, as well as understanding information you previously learned.” Mrs. Gail believes practice tests help students focus on what is being asked, help students look for key words, use the process of elimination, and have patience under pressure.
Many teachers agree with the Gails’ and know students can prove to themselves they CAN do it! Mrs. Gail says it best when she states what we all don’t want to hear, “You need to become confident while taking a test because unfortunately you will be taking tests for the rest of you life.” Yikes! In an interview with Principal Ittner, he states that our school is ready for the challenge. “E.V. Cain has benchmarks to make sure students are getting the information and, if not, E.V.Cain re-teaches those students who seem to not be completely on page,” he explains. Study hall and ZAP are other ways to keep our students on task and ready for STAR tests.
Wildcat Gym or Classroom?
For as long as sixth grade students have been taking STAR tests, they have never taken the test outside of their teachers’ classrooms. E.V.Cain has decided to move the sixth grade into the Wildcat gym to take the tests. Why? Well, for years eighth graders have successfully taken the test in the gym. They moved sixth graders in hope that students will be more successful. Student Ava Nieto, sixth grader, states, “I don’t like it because it is a bigger room with more distractions.” An anonymous sixth grade student reports, “I don’t like it because my teacher won’t be there to comfort us.” There is some uncertainty for sure.
Not every student feels that way though. Jason Hensler feels that it will be “cool” and that it doesn’t really matter. When sixth graders take the test in the gym they will be tested on the basic Language Arts and Math. “I’ll miss giving the kids a good snack and getting them in the right frame of mind. Eighth grade has been taking the test successfully the gym, so I am willing to try having sixth graders take the test out of my classroom,” Mrs. Gail states.
It seems like all the school’s hard work will pay off. Principal Ittner states that the goal for our school is to make sure every student will be at grade level. “Although it is very unlikely that every student will make it, I believe we will have an improvement,” he says. (With these strong words from Principal Ittner, hopefully every student will improve and have a good testing results.) Good luck, students!
Why we should have more field trips?
By: Alexis Champion I think we should have more field trips because we deserve it. For eighth grade, it would be nice for them before they leave. For the seventh just to do something nice. They don’t have many field trips. The six graders should have more so we have something to remember the six grade by. I would like to have more so we can go places that are fun, like the beach, lake, museums and other things. But we would have to be on our best behavior.
I think if we’re good we can have more field trips, so be on your best behavior. A lot of teachers would say we can’t have more because parents have to pay for their children to go on field trips. But, if we do fundraisers and sell stuff we can have some money to pay off the expenses and it would be easier to pay off fun field trips. I hope we can do this, and if we can I would love to go to places we never thought of.
