TOUCH  OF  CLASS  2012

February 14th through 17th
“Light Up the Night”

By continuing a tradition that was started more than twenty years ago, we are hoping to inspire our school community to recognize the inner light that we each have and to utilize this light to make a brighter future for all. We are reaching for higher levels of mutual respect, kindness, effort, and personal pride. We want everyone to not only become the best we can be, but also to push ourselves to a higher level – to shine our light to make our world better. As we take part in these activities together, we will meet new people, get to know our friends better, and see others from a new perspective. Make your light shine!

Tuesday – Dress-up is “School Pride” - wear E.V.Cain colors
- Special Assembly Schedule  -  Two assemblies, one for 6th & 7th and one for 8th,

speakers to set the tone for the week.
- During 7th period students will be invited to share their inner light on special form

you admire.

SponsorsVOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR TOC

Dear Families,
Next week, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, our school will be experiencing a “touch of class”.  Touch of Class is a series of activities and events designed to encourage everyone to be “classier”. To be “classier” means to be nicer, kinder, and more respectful towards each other. We want to inspire each other to become better than we are and to take pride in doing our best. We want to have the classiest school around!  Our slogan this year is “Light Up the Night”. We all have an “inner light” that when used, makes the world a better place.
Please encourage your students to be as involved as possible. The more involved they are, the more impact this will have. Please remember that these are “middle school” events, so let’s keep their age in mind. No matter what your student may tell you, they don’t need fancy new clothes. This does not involve a “prom” or the like. These are fun activities to encourage all to spend time together and appreciate each other’s best qualities.

We also need parents to be involved by helping us with many of the activities, so please consider joining us in the fun when possible. Call Mrs. Stryker at 745-3364 or the school office at 823-6106 if you can help in any way.  Please look over the events on the other side of this letter.  Although we welcome your presence at any of the activities, we especially need help with putting–up the decorations Thursday afternoon and evening as this is a major undertaking.  We will be decorating from 3:00pm until about 8:00pm.  We also need help at the banquet on Friday from 10:00am until 1:00pm to make this wonderful meal runs as smoothly as possible.  As always, we enjoy having parents chaperone the dances so let us know if you are available.

Thank you, Leadership.

DECEMBER EDITION

Band works hard for Christmas Parade
By: Julia Travers
There are many activities outside the classroom of E.V. Cain, and one of them is band.  Mr.Kepfer and band members have been working hard all year, but were working even harder for the Christmas Parade.  They did an amazing job in the Veterans Day Parade, but did an even better job in the Christmas Parade.  In elective, band has been working hard every day, and even at home they’re working for an hour or even longer!
If you went to the Christmas Parade and saw the E. V. Cain band, you would have seen the band’s uniforms: sweatshirts and black pants or jeans, and wrapped around them were Christmas lights and decorations.
The Parade was on Saturday, December 3, 2011 on High Street and Lincoln Way and was at 5:30 p.m.  There were 100 kids marching in band at the Parade!  Some band members couldn’t attend the Parade, but it was still a lot fun for everyone, and they did an amazing job!

Elective classes in one spot
By: Dakota Larkins
I think we should have Elective classes in one area, such as an “Elective Village”.  So then we don’t have kids just wandering around campus.  Not all Elective teachers take roll, so the kids can miss a class and the elective teacher wouldn’t even know that they were missing but, it would be hard for some of the teachers like Mr.Prero because he also teaches 7th grade History, Anthro, and English.  So, he would have to go back and forth between passing periods, carrying all of his class materials.  It would be a benefit for the 6th graders, but not for some of the teachers.  It would also prevent tardies because then all the 6th graders are going at the same time to their elective, only a short ways away.  So, they all would be there about the same time. Also, if we had two Elective Villages, one for the 6th grade and one for the 7thand 8th, I think it would help a lot but that is my opinion.

Out of Class Experiences
by Eric Peterson

We need field trips at our school because it is a different way to learn outside of the classroom. Field trips make learning more fun! There are lots of different places to visit even around where we live.  As an example, we recently visited the California Caverns in San Andreas, CA. We learned all about the insides of caves. There are many parts of these caves that you cannot touch because it will stop the growth of the stalagmites and stalactites. It was explained to us that we have certain oils on our hands that affect the growth of the rocks. During the winter there are also problems with flooding in the caves, which can happen from too much rain and snow. This can also destroy the growth of the rock because it will eventually wash all the rock away.

All of this information was learned by going on a school field trip. If I hadn’t gone on a field trip I don’t think I would have really understood how caves work. I fully support having field trips in our schools because it’s another way to learn about things without sitting in a classroom. Even though field trips cost money, it is so well worth the extra expense.

The drive on the way to any fieldtrip is a lot fun too, as you get to visit with friends and classmates the whole way there and back. We usually get to listen to music on our I pods, eat snacks or even get in a short nap. Students normally provide their own lunches, but there are times we get to eat out too.

I personally feel that field trips are an awesome way to learn. The change in scenery, the fresh air, and not sitting in a classroom all add up to a great way of learning. I hope teachers keep this in mind when deciding on their next class outing, and that parents are willing to pay for the added expense, because in my book, it’s well worth it.

Go Green and Recycle
By Leanna Carver

I know that I recycle things, , and others should, too, because recycling is awesome for the city, and I think recycling is good for the earth too.  So, use recycling to help the world so there is no trash on the roads , and it also helps  animals.  They can get sick from all of the pollution in the water!  Factories need to find different ways to dispose of their pollutants so that the waste will not go into the rivers and streams.  Also people can’t have clean water without recycling.  Also, when people go out into the rivers they don’t want trash .
I know that recycling helps the earth and the animals staying clean and staying healthy. It would help others too. I also think that recycling would help the schools so the kids will not have to keep picking up all of the trash. It would also help people’s jobs. If the trash and other things get stuck in holes or pipes it could be dangerous. I’m pretty sure that other people don’t appreciate garbage in their front yard, and we don’t appreciate garbage in our school yard.

Why can’t six graders be able to pick our electives?
By Justin Henricks

As a six grader I think we should be able to pick our electives. Most six graders agree with me. They think that because they want to be in an elective they have an interest in. Mr. Ittner says that it depends on your grade level and the teacher you have.

A lot of people agree too because they want to be with their friends, which could be good or bad depending on how respectful they are in class. I personally feel that it would be easier to do that, but it still could come out bad. Mr. Prero says that it would be fine with him and that it’s a problem for the office trying to get kids in a class at the time that the teachers have.  You would have to find a teacher that is qualified in the elective.

More Dances for Sixth Grade!
By Olivia Hubbard
In my opinion, sixth grade is being treated like little kids, as if it were continually like Halloween. For example, seventh grade and eighth grade has had several dances and sixth grade has had one. We also need better dances too. Sixth grade is not a bunch of little kids. We deserve more dances! After the Christmas dance, our next dance is Valentine’s Day. At the dance we should be able to have fun dancing, not play games. When we had our first dance, I thought that it would have been better. Now that I have taken a poll on the subject, many people say “yes” and many people say “no”. I have to say that the first dance was not fun but I hope that the next one will be better.

No Makeup
By: Maryellen Wood
In my opinion girls wear too much makeup.  Most girls say that just some makeup is enough.  Every day I see people wearing too much makeup.  I think they will look better without any on at all. Some girls say, “I think girls should wear as much makeup as they do,” or “I think they shouldn’t wear a lot of makeup.”
Most girls want some makeup, not a lot. They look better without any makeup, but some girls put it all over their faces.  Some girls say,”I think girls should do whatever they want.” But I think a lot of girls look weird with makeup on.
Many girls wear makeup because they can or just because. They also wear makeup to look pretty to be more beautiful. To do this, girls put on mascara and stuff like that. Girls are already pretty the way they are.

Open The Library
By Coltrane Rugg
The school library should open back up because during school hours kids can’t read books unless they brought their own. What if a kid doesn’t bring a book, and he wants to read? He can’t go to the library because he doesn’t have one.
If we had a library, that wouldn’t be a problem. The library is being is reopened, though. The office is using funding which they didn’t have before. The library closed because they didn’t have somebody to run it, but now they do. I asked the office, and they told me that they don’t know when the school library will reopen or the money to pay that person. So until then, we are still without a library.

Why don’t we have new basketball nets for the outdoor basketball hoops on the blacktop?
By Dawson Fugate.

Should we change the nets out and get new ones or should we just leave them how they are. Eight of my friends agree that we should change them out and either get new string nets or chain nets.

Mr. Ittner says on the topic that “The school put new ones up but they still came of and we had to tie them down with tie downs”.

Mr. Gail says that, “The nets for the outdoor basket ball hoops could be stolen and other kids not from our school but after hours, use them for other activities. Some kids use them for games to see how high they can jump and touch them. Other schools use chain nets, but that can be dangerous because you can break your finger in between the metal links.”

Maybe next time we order new basketball nets we can get thicker rope so that it wont tear as easily as the other ones do. Also we should try to get a warranty on the nets, so that if they tear we can send them back.

SHOULD WE REPLACE THE COMPUTERS?
BY: Shane walker
Should we replace the computers in the 6 grade computer lab? Half of them barely  even run  and there aren’t enough for ever one that run very fast. It takes at least ten to eleven minutes to just get to the home screen plus their projects  the students do? Ten of my friends agree with me that we should replace the computers. The school may not be able to fund it but we should at least make more fun raisers top fund it. Six grade kids take a long time to get work done. There are 14 computers that run very fast, and there are 10 computers that work properly. So do whatever you can to help replace the computers.

STOP DRUGS!

By: Alyssa
Do people think it’s cool just to smoke pot and do pills? That’s not cool at all! I even know some kids who bring it and smoke it at school! But these kids don’t even know what they’re doing and how much trouble these people can get into. These kids can go to juvenile hall. And what will their parents say if they found out what they do at school? Do they think they can get away with it? I don’t think so, and all of these kids can get in big trouble! The police can come and accuse the parents when it was not them. Although the parents are responsible for what the kids take and do at school.
These kids don’t know how bad this stuff can hurt them, and they will regret it eventually! Drugs can damage people’s lives! Many people do drugs so is that why you guys do them? I mean I bet you kids don’t have chemo therapy and arthritis. Yeah, your kid’s backs might hurt but that’s not good to do for no reason, and I know that you guys do it just because you like it. Just stop now because it will jack up your lives and you won’t be able to do the stuff you would be able to do when you’re older, so just stop now and make the right choice!

Stop Littering
By Marissa Krause
I think that littering is bad.  Mr.Ittner doesn’t want to keep going around picking up other people’s trash.  It could really get boring after awhile.  It shouldn’t really hurt you that bad to throw a couple of pieces of trash away; there are lots of big trash cans around the campus.  How about you go out there picking up everybody’s trash like Mr.Ittner does?  People need to stop thinking about themselves and start thinking of others for a change.

The school doesn’t want the campus being dirty and disgusting!  And neither do I.  Do you?  You are here for seven and a half hours.  Do you want to work and play in a garbage dump?  I’m pretty sure no one does.  And all the litter is not just garbage.  Look at the Lost and Found box in the main hallway. IT’S OVERFLOWING!

How do your parents feel about you not coming home with the clothes that you had on when you came to school?  And people can just take and pick up something that is not theirs; it is yours!  And when you go to find your lunchbox or when you go to find your jacket and it is not there, well, that’s your fault for not keeping track of your stuff!

Wet Soccer Field

 by: Hailey Belman

When you play soccer on the field, do you notice that the grass is so wet or slippery? When you try to kick the ball, you slip; or, when you run to defend the goal, you can also slip. It’s not very safe to play on a wet field. I’ve fallen a couple times, and I’ve seen other people fall. Do they leave on the sprinklers? It feels kind of like a swamp out there.
I asked my friend Alyssa, and she said, “I don’t think that it’s safe to play on the wet field”.
I asked Mr. Gail, and he said,” In the beginning of the school year we try to drain the water from the field, but we can’t, because the drains aren’t very good. So that’s why the water is always soaking in the field, and that’s why it’s not very safe.
Is anyone going to stop this wet field? I would like to stop this in case people get hurt. My friends said they would like to help the field to be safe, as well.

Why we need longer lunches

By Rylan Walsh.

We need an extra ten minutes for lunch. Some people buy lunch and forget their cards. Then, they have to wait 10-15 minutes. Next, they have to wait until everyone is done, which takes 5 minutes. Then, they have to eat, and that takes 1-10 minutes. And, finally, we don’t have enough time to exercise and get sun. Exercise and sun are very important because we have to sit in a stuffy, old classroom all day!

Our current lunch is 45 minutes. I think we should add ten minutes, so that it would be 55 minutes. Some people are injured, like I was a couple weeks ago. I could barely get my lunch in time to eat.

Pizza
By Matthew Lee
At first I thought it would be a good idea to ask for more pizza, but now I know the lunch people work hard enough. I kind of thought about it, but I never really put my mind to it. Just imagine, the lunch people making 8 different things and more pizza! That would be a crazy job. We can’t have more pizza! And some people are fine with the choices we have. So, if we made more we probably would have to get rid of other choices.
The lunch people also make pizza for 753 people! That’s already crazy enough. I do not want to be a lunch person, but I guess the lunch people like making cheese, pepperoni, and other things, especially for 753 people.

Less vacations, more summer
By Gage Boustead

I think we should have longer summers and shorter vacations because we would have an extra 5-7 weeks of school, which means we and all the teachers would have an extra 5-7 weeks of summer, which would make all the teachers and kids happy, I think. And one of my teachers said that we don’t even have enough time to even finish all of our study books, which I don’t think is fair to all of us and all the teachers that we will have in the future.
Almost all the people I ask agree with me, which is about 90%. This is why I think we should have less vacation and more summer.
